That’s what makes Richard Sherman Richard Sherman. Only the best of the best are able to pull off this feat. Ahkello Witherspoon showed plenty of promise as a rookie. That’s usually all you’re looking for. Guys that can be competent and you build on that play. Unfortunately, Witherspoon had a sophomore slump. At least during the beginning of the year. The second-year corner started to come on strong towards the end of the year, but a sprained knee ended a promising second half of the year.By the numbersDuring his final five games, Witherspoon had some impressive numbers. Against some pretty good competition, too. Witherspoon gave up eight catches on 23 targets. Per PFF, from weeks 10-17(obviously he missed the last two), Witherspoon had the fifth lowest passer rating when targeted, at 48.6. He seemed to be taking the next step and getting back on track.By his playWitherspoon was the benefit on some of those throws. For example the first throw to Odell Beckham Jr. was a drop. To me, he looked fine against everyone not named OBJ. Which, duh. There are some technical parts to Witherspoon’s game that he has to improve. He played 20 in the slot, 10 outside, and one in the backfield. Meanwhile, Trent Taylor played only nine snaps — eight outside and one in the slot. I have to think Taylor’s back is a big problem for him. What else explains this drastic decline after such a solid rookie season?Rookie defensive lineman Jullian Taylor was active for the first time this season. He finished with one tackle Dante Pettis Jersey , and a fairly positive graded performance by Pro Football Focus. He played 17 snaps, including nine at LEO, four at REO, three at right end, and one at defensive tackle.Also on defense, Malcolm Smith saw a steep decline in his work. He was listed as the starting weak side linebacker following Foster’s release (inactive until his release is formalized on Monday), but Elijah Lee nearly doubled him up in snaps. Smith played 26 defensive snaps, while Lee played 49. Mark Nzeocha was the primary SAM linebacker, while Dekoda Watson stuck to his edge rusher role. One has to wonder what Smith’s future is with the 49ers.Finally, the secondary saw rotation at free safety. Jimmie Ward broke his arm and left after four defensive snaps. D.J. Reed replaced him, but suffered a heel injury of his own.
